Volume 1: begin with the foundations

Volume 1 covers clothing and equipment, tool use, carving projects, fire, building a fire lay, cooking and animal tracking. It is a useful starting point if you want to work through these subjects with children.

The book is aimed at parents and teachers. Activities develop from basic skills towards more challenging work, allowing you to choose what fits your group and experience.

Examples in the carving chapters include tent pegs, wizard wands, pocket whistles and spoons. The cooking section includes bannock and Dutch ovens; the tracking chapter explains making casts of footprints.

Volume 2: broaden the subjects

Volume 2 covers hunting, shelter building, navigation, foraging, water, containers, cordage and running courses. Choose it when those are the topics you want to explore, or when you already have Volume 1 and would like the other volume.

The running-courses chapter includes example approach letters, booking forms, safety briefings, risk assessments and site information. It is useful for seeing how Leigh structures sessions, with examples to adapt to your own setting.

Volumes 1 & 2: keep both together

The combined edition brings the subjects of both volumes into a single book. It is the straightforward choice if you are starting without either separate volume and want the full range of topics.

If you already own one volume, buying the other separately avoids purchasing that volume’s material again.
